Cheese Balls and Parties!
I don't think I've ever been to a party that didn't have some form of cheese being served at the table, have you? I think cheese will always be a favorite at parties so you can't go wrong by putting a cheese ball on the party menu that's for sure.
Skull Tips & Ideas
- Pirate Party Favorite: A skull cheese ball can be served at Pirate Parties because skulls are symbols of pirates and can be a really fun idea. You can serve your skull all white or you can dress up your skull to look like a pirate by adding a eye patch if you want or even a few thin slices of bell peppers placed on the cheek to look like cuts on the face.
- Halloween: A skull cheese ball can be served at Halloween Parties because a skull is a spooky symbol of Halloween as well. You can serve your skull all white or you can dress up your skull to look spooky or fun. Your theme can be a vampire skull (like the one pictured above) you can tell it's a vampire skull by the fang teeth. Your skull could also be a skull with candy worms or bugs crawling out of the eye sockets and mouth.
- Spreading Cream Cheese: You can make your skull all white by spreading cream cheese on the outside of your cheese ball. It doesn't matter if your cheese ball is orange on the inside or not. Cream cheese spreads beautifully over the top and doesn't slide down the sides either.
- Teeth: Specialty candy stores will sale candy teeth all the time if your interested in adding a row of teeth on your cheese ball. I have seen cheese balls served by using real false teeth too!. This makes a nice set of choppers that's for sure!! But you can't eat them. At Halloween you can always find wax form teeth and gums that are edible or even plastic form teeth found in the Halloween section of your local department store works good too. At specialty candy stores you can find rotten hillbilly teeth as well. hahaha! If you can't find teeth at all you can simply add white candy all in a row to represent the teeth. It looks really great. Even a row of candy corn candy is fun for a Halloween skull.
- Sauce: In the photo above, red sweet chili sauce was used on the bottom of the plate and in the eye sockets to represent blood. This is perfect for a vampire skull since you expect to see blood on a vampire. You can also use strawberry jam or jelly or even hot pepper jelly in red. I think the most popular pepper jelly found in stores is in green but you can find it in red as well. Pepper jelly tastes great with cream cheese and cream cheese, cheese balls. The taste goes perfect together.
- Plating: If your adding a sauce on the bottom of the plate, make sure you so not add the crackers to the same plate. Put them on a separate plate beside the cheese ball instead. Why you ask? Because if you add the crackers to the plate with sauce on it, the cracker will absorb the moisture from the sauce and get all soggy. If your not adding a sauce to the bottom of the plate then it's perfectly fine to add crackers all around the skull.
- Sauce Bowl: Do you want a sauce but you also want the crackers on the same plate as well?? Well here's what we do for fun. Instead of poring a sauce in the bottom of the plate, we push a small bowl in the mouth of our skull that we pore the sauce in. This way we can add the crackers all around the sides of the skull and the skull looks like he's got his mouth open holding the bowl. It looks fantastic!
- Skull Shape: In order to make your cheese ball you have to mold it like your working with clay. It's very easy once you have all your cheese mix, mixed up. Once you start working with it you'll find it's not as hard as it may look. At Halloween time or at specialty cake stores you can actually find skull molds that work perfect for this but it's really easy to do it yourself and not have to go to the expense of buying a mold. So give it a try first.
- Recipe: What recipe to use and where can I get the recipe? You can use just about any "COLD" cheese ball recipe that you want. Some recipes just call for a mixture of different cheeses and spices. Some recipes call for chopped ham or bacon mixed in. You are going to find many different recipes over the Internet for cheese balls so it's really up to you as to what taste your going for. Just remember that the cheeseball; no matter what is in the recipe, will be covered up with the layer of white creamcheese that you spread over the outside of the skull anyway. Cheese Balls must be refrigerated too. See National Cheese Ball Day for cheese ball recipes.
